Infant Physiotherapy in Toronto for Babies and Young Children
Early movement matters. Our paediatric physiotherapists provide infant development assessments and treatment for babies and young children across Toronto and the GTA, at our clinics or in your home.
Signs Parents Notice That Bring Them to PPA
Parents often notice something before anyone else does. A baby who isn’t rolling by the expected age, a preference for turning their head to one side, a slight tightness in the neck, or a delay in sitting, pulling to stand, or walking. These observations matter, and acting on them early makes a meaningful difference.
Common reasons families seek infant physiotherapy:
- General concerns about movement, strength, or development raised by a parent or physician
- Developmental delays in motor milestones (rolling, sitting, crawling, standing)
- Torticollis: a tightening of the neck muscle that causes head tilting or rotation preference
- Plagiocephaly: flat head syndrome, often related to positioning or torticollis
- Hypotonia: low muscle tone affecting movement and posture
- Prematurity: infants born early often benefit from early physiotherapy support
- Difficulty with feeding posture or positioning

What Is Infant Physiotherapy?
Infant physiotherapy is a specialized form of paediatric physiotherapy focused on babies and very young children, typically from birth to around two years of age. A physiotherapist trained in infant development assesses how a baby is moving, whether their muscle tone and strength are developing as expected, and whether any early intervention could support healthier development.
Sessions with infants are gentle, hands-on, and guided by play and natural movement. Parents are an active part of every session, learning handling techniques, positioning strategies, and home exercises they can carry into daily routines: bath time, feeding, tummy time, and play.

What to Expect at Your Baby’s Physiotherapy Assessment
Step 1: Initial Assessment
Your physiotherapist will take a full developmental history and observe how your baby moves during natural play and handling. They will assess muscle tone, strength, range of motion, and motor milestone progression. You’ll receive a clear explanation of findings and a recommended plan of care.
Step 2: Hands-On Treatment
Treatment is gentle and play-based, adapted entirely to your infant’s age, comfort, and developmental stage. Techniques may include soft tissue release, gentle stretching, movement facilitation, and positioning strategies. Our therapists have a breadth of treatment skills they use during infant handling.
Step 3: A Home Program for Your Family
You’ll leave each session with practical techniques to use at home. Physiotherapy progress for infants is strongly supported by what happens between sessions, and our therapists make sure parents feel confident and equipped.
Infant Development Experience You Can Trust
PPA has been providing community-based paediatric physiotherapy across the GTA for over 20 years. Infant development is one of our most common referral types. Many of our physiotherapists have backgrounds in acute care and rehabilitation settings, meaning they bring a thorough clinical understanding of infant development to every assessment.
We offer infant physiotherapy at our Scarborough clinic (Variety Village), our Whitby clinic (Abilities Centre), and through home visits across Toronto and the GTA. For many families with newborns, a home visit is the most practical option.
